I think the statement " I can work under pressure " is all too familiar to some if not all of us who have had the privilege of sending out various application letters.

Lemme say sadly, I presume you never got any feedback from where you sent the applications. I would attribute this to the joblessness in this country, but that's a story for another day.

Readers, allow me to deviate a little bit and share with you a letter I wrote in my diary (yes, I said diary) a few weeks ago but believe me I had absolutely no intention of mailing it 😂😂. I must confess, however, that it is a little bit embarrassing so try not to judge me too harshly. Just like Adele, go easy on me.

"I have a confession to make. I am feeling really sorry and I don't know where to start. I know you will probably get mad when you get to read this. Today I went against my vows. I am so much aware that a part of growing up is making your own decisions and living with the consequences. I believe that vows go unbroken but I did the contrary and I didn't live up to my words. I cheated in our long-term relationship. How can I be swayed and seduced to go into another relationship and settle for less than that which I am capable of? I know that I am a man of class. What happened to forever? I can't believe that I have decided to trudge on a different path that will have a consequential trajectory on our relationship. How can a man of my caliber stoop that low and do such a heinous if not horrendous act?

People cheat for different reasons. But I can't find any significant cause to justify my actions. The relationship has always been amazing and awesome. I always got the patience that I craved and most importantly the person who really understood what I wanted. Whatever style I wished for I got. It was a true manifestation of 'your wish is my command'. The art of time taking, precision in its purest form. The soft gentle head massages. And oh! how that warm towel slides over my head after skilfully giving my head that artistic touch leaving me in euphoria. Some might even compare it to a heavenly touch."

I penned this, not to my girlfriend but to my barber.

I know you must be confused, but here's the thing. A friend of mine reached out. He informed me that he had opened a Barbershop and he was determined to showcase his shaving 'prowess'. I almost chuckled at his sentiments. In my mind I was like bruh, you can't use my head as a shaving tutorial. I honestly had a rough time coming to terms. You know there's this unspoken barber's code, an implied understanding of mutual trust between a man and his barber. Every man literally believes that his barber is the best of the best. You just can't compromise how you look.  I honestly doubted if my friend would equal my barber's level of sophistication. After battling with my thoughts, I finally decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. I mean, there is no harm in trying out new things. I swear this felt like cheating hence the sentiments in my letter.

As I sat on the barber’s seat staring at my reflection in the mirror ready to get that ‘close shave’ (I mean both literally and figuratively), I kept wondering how the outcome will be. Will my friends who love to chachisha give me that sudden gaze and ask me " kwani ulinyolewa wapi?" as they hysterically laugh at my pathetic hairstyle.

Trust me when I tell you that that phrase can have some serious repercussions on a man's self-esteem. So, I crossed my fingers throughout the entire process as I hoped for the best...

But here is the catch. My friend did an impeccable job. He really did. Truth be told, I was a little bit ashamed of myself. As I sat admiring my well-done head with that killer haircut, I looked at my life in retrospect and remembered all those moments when some people doubted me and a few who strongly believed in me.

Lemme take you back to my opening remarks: Do you remember the one about jobs? Yes, that one. Well, here is a juxtaposition you might have heard before "Jobs are given to those with experience but you might stop and ask, how do I gain the experience if I don't get the job in the first place? " Ironic right?

You'd be surprised at the gold mine most of us are sitting on just waiting for someone to believe in what we are capable of. When I say this, you might be tempted to think it's all about giving someone a job or putting your money into someone's idea, but it's really not. We all have something to offer. Take me for example, all I had to do was avail myself at that barbershop. Let us believe in our friends and support them whenever we can. It may be their hustles or whatever thing that we can. Do not hesitate to give someone an opportunity when you are in a position to.

Eminem made a life-changing point when he said " ... you only got one shot, do not miss your chance to blow. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime..."

Believe in yourself and others will, too. My friend really believed in himself even though I shed some level of doubt on him; little did I know that my friend literally had some 'gifted hands'

When you get that one chance that you've been dreaming of, give it your best shot. Remember you never get a second chance to make a good first-time impression.

I am sure at some point in life people will doubt you too, especially on your competence in a particular field. But such is life. And if life is a simulation, best believe that self-confidence is the cheat code.

So, men… how faithful or serious is your relationship with your barber? And ladies, I am also curious. I'm interested to know if you tend to keep your hairdresser the way most men do with their barbers.
